Reddit SEO in 2026: Reddit loses Google traffic and starts requiring login

Reddit lost more than a million weekly visits from search engines in October 2026 and will test a logged-in-only version outside the United States. What’s known, what’s still undefined, and what to do with Reddit in your search strategy.

On October 29, 2026, Reddit, the forum network organized by topic-based communities (subreddits), published its quarterly shareholder letter for the third quarter with two announcements that affect any brand doing SEO on Reddit. The first: in October, search traffic to the platform dropped by more than one million visits per week, on average. The second: in the fourth quarter, Reddit will begin testing a version of the site for logged-in users only, in markets outside the United States that it didn’t name. For brands, that changes the math: Reddit threads are going to capture less open search demand, and that demand is going to shift to whoever answers it on their own pages and participates under their name in the subreddits where their buyers ask questions.

The business, meanwhile, keeps growing. According to the earnings release, Reddit brought in $895 million in revenue for the quarter, up 53% year over year, with 130.3 million DAUq (daily active unique users, the audience metric the company reports). The letter warns that if the decline in search traffic continues at that pace, DAUq could fall in the fourth quarter “by a low double-digit percentage.”

Reddit SEO in 2024 and 2025 rested on two assumptions: that Reddit threads rank in Google and that anyone can read them. Both are weakening at once. Steve Huffman, Reddit’s cofounder and CEO, said on the analyst call that the company will likely trade some reach for engagement, according to Search Engine Journal (SEJ), the SEO trade publication that covered the call. For anyone thinking about search beyond Google, as we discussed in our interview on Search Everywhere Optimization, Reddit’s value shifts toward being a community, a research source, and a source of citations in AI-generated answers.

Reddit’s login wall: what we know and what’s still undefined

The letter says that “a key piece of the work to retain new audiences is moving Reddit toward a logged-in-only experience,” and that full tests begin in the fourth quarter “in select markets outside the U.S.” The results, it adds, will inform a version of that model “on a global scale.” Among the reasons, Reddit cites more relevant content, better signals for ad targeting, and protection of its data corpus.

The wall doesn’t yet have a defined boundary. According to Axios, the business news outlet that interviewed Huffman that day, the homepage will remain open without an account, and anyone arriving from a search engine or a shared link will still be able to view that content. Reddit is still working out what else will remain visible without logging in. Commenting and voting will require login, and the company is relaunching a read-only incognito mode in its app. On the call, Huffman said Reddit is looking for the right balance before prompting login, for people arriving “from a shared link or from search” (via SEJ). And he was direct: “This is a test, but we’re going to make this transition.”

Huffman explained the change in two different ways. He told Axios that the decision isn’t a response to changes in Google Search, and that it’s about “making the best version of Reddit.” To analysts, however, he pointed to Google as his leading hypothesis for the traffic drop. On the same call, Huffman added that the vast majority of scraping on Reddit happens on open, non-logged-in content. To separate blocking training bots from blocking search engine access, we wrote a guide on how to block AI crawlers.

Why is Reddit’s traffic from Google dropping?

Huffman laid out a two-part hypothesis, according to SEJ. The bigger factor is AI Overviews and AI Mode, the AI-generated answers Google shows above search results or in their own tab, which he said at minimum push links further down the page. The second is that automatically translated content appears to be ranking worse, especially outside the United States. Neither the letter nor the call specifies how much weight each factor carries, and Google hasn’t confirmed the second part. Huffman also clarified that “Google is still crawling us as heavily as ever.” And according to the Reuters news agency, in a report republished by Investing.com, he said: “The reality is that AI Mode doesn’t drive traffic, not for us or for anyone.”

There’s also an open negotiation. In July 2026, CNBC, citing The Wall Street Journal, reported that Reddit had discussed cutting off Google’s AI systems’ access, and that the data licensing deal, worth roughly $60 million a year according to those reports, is up for renewal. We explain this type of deal in our piece on branded media. Asked about the licensing deals with Google and OpenAI, Huffman said conversations are ongoing and that failing to reach a deal is “a possible outcome” (via SEJ).

Reddit in Latin America and Spain: translated content is the most exposed

Reddit’s growth is happening outside the United States. According to the third-quarter 2026 earnings release, international DAUq reached 79.6 million (up 24% year over year), while U.S. DAUq fell 2%, to 50.7 million. Logged-out international users grew 33%. But each international user generates far less revenue: average revenue per user (ARPU) was $2.43 outside the United States, versus $13.82 inside it.

Much of that growth came from machine translation. According to Reddit’s help center, the feature is available to users in Argentina, Mexico, Spain, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Uruguay, and other countries, using third-party services like Google Translate. In 2024, Reddit announced that this translated content would be indexed to appear in search engines in each user’s own language. According to EMARKETER, the digital marketing research firm, Brazil’s DAUq grew nearly 80% in the first quarter of 2025, thanks to translation and local communities.

That’s precisely the content that, according to Huffman, Google appears to be ranking worse. Reddit Pro, the free set of organic tools for brands, is only available in English-speaking countries, according to Reddit. And the login tests begin outside the United States, in markets Reddit hasn’t named. For a brand selling in Spanish or Portuguese, translated threads that show up in Google are the most fragile part of Reddit’s search presence.

How to do SEO on Reddit after the login wall

SEO on Reddit that works rests on three things: owned pages that answer what people ask Reddit, genuine participation under a brand profile, and tracking AI citations by platform. The less open traffic Reddit gets, the more valuable what you control becomes.

  1. Audit which keywords surface Reddit threads. Those results are the most exposed: according to the third-quarter 2026 earnings release, logged-out users in the United States fell 4%, to 27.3 million.
  2. Publish your own page for every purchase-related question. Comparisons, pricing, pros and cons. If threads lose clicks, that demand shifts to whoever answers on an open page, as our analysis of HubSpot’s SEO shows.
  3. Participate as a community, with a verified profile. Reddit launched verified profiles for brands in the fourth quarter of 2025, according to MediaPost, the advertising trade publication. Answer where your buyers are asking questions. Jen Wong, Reddit’s COO, said Reddit is “pretty skeptical of GEO” (generative engine optimization, the practice of optimizing to appear in AI-generated answers; via SEJ).
  4. Track AI citations by platform. According to Ahrefs, the SEO tool, Reddit was the most-cited domain by ChatGPT in the United States in September 2026, at 16.8%. In 2025 data from Semrush, another SEO platform, Reddit’s presence in ChatGPT went from around 60% to roughly 10% of answers in a single month. More in our guide to agentic search.
  5. In Spanish and Portuguese, look for native subreddits. According to EMARKETER, local communities like r/futebol and r/Gambiarra grew in Brazil.
  6. Keep an eye on Reddit Answers. According to MediaPost, Reddit’s AI-powered search tool went from roughly 1 million to 15 million queries in the year leading up to February 2026.

What to watch

Four data points will determine how much this really changes: which markets Reddit names for the tests, how much of a thread someone arriving from Google can read without logging in, whether the licensing deal with Google gets renewed, and what DAUq figure Reddit reports for the fourth quarter, in early 2027. If the login prompt appears before readers reach the actual answers, a large share of Reddit SEO in the test markets is going to play out on someone else’s page instead.

Frequently asked questions

What is Reddit SEO?

Reddit SEO is the strategy of showing up in search engines and AI answers through Reddit. It includes participating in threads that rank in Google or get cited by ChatGPT and AI Overviews, and covering the questions people ask Reddit with your own content. Since October 2026, when Reddit announced mandatory login tests, the owned-content side of that strategy matters more.

Is Reddit going to put up a login wall?

Reddit announced on October 29, 2026, in its shareholder letter, that it’s moving toward a logged-in-only experience. Tests begin in the fourth quarter of 2026 in markets outside the United States that Reddit hasn’t named. According to Axios, for now, anyone arriving at Reddit from a search engine or a shared link can still view that content without logging in.

Why is Reddit’s traffic from Google dropping?

Reddit said in its third-quarter 2026 letter that it lost more than a million weekly search visits in October. Its CEO, Steve Huffman, attributes it, as a hypothesis, to Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, and to automatically translated Reddit content ranking worse. Google hasn’t confirmed that explanation, and Reddit hasn’t said how much weight each factor carries.

Is Reddit still useful for showing up in ChatGPT?

Yes. According to Ahrefs, Reddit was the most-cited domain by ChatGPT in the United States in September 2026, with a 16.8% share. That figure fluctuates a lot: according to Semrush, in 2025 ChatGPT went from citing Reddit in around 60% of answers to roughly 10% within a single month. That’s why it’s worth tracking Reddit citations by platform and by month.

How do you do SEO on Reddit after the login wall?

To do SEO on Reddit, start by finding your commercial keywords where Reddit threads show up, and publish your own page for each of those questions. Then participate with a verified brand profile and named people in the subreddits where your buyers ask questions, and track Reddit citations across each AI platform. In Spanish and Portuguese, prioritize native subreddits over translated threads.
